Île Sainte Marie is
a granite island that lies off the eastern
coast of Madagascar, being
approximately 50 miles long. Once offering refuge to pirates & now
the final resting place of many, the Pirate Cemetery is well worth a
visit. After Nosy Be, Sainte Marie is the most popular holiday
island.
The Island
is famous for its whale viewing safaris between July and September.
It is possible to see the whales in
the channel which separates the island from the mainland. Each
year hump-backed whales migrate here to calve and to mate again, being
a huge attraction. Whale safaris are offered by boat. Scientists
studying whales stay at Princesse Bora during the whale season and
offer guests a chance to participate in their research, collecting DNA
etc. which can be a thrilling highlight to a contrasting a relaxing
holiday.
Excellent
whales sightings can therefore be expected.
The coral reefs offshore offer
excellent snorkelling and scuba diving. Enchanting
beaches bordered by coconut palms and a extraordinary rainforest. This
island is beautiful, offering the ultimate escape from civilisation
with the lush surroundings bringing to mind images of an enormous
tropical garden. |
